MAYO: LA CONSAGRACIÓN DEL ENTRETIEMPO

MAY: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HALFTIME

May has arrived.

Something I tell myself every half hour because, honestly, I still can't quite believe it. May comes with that absolute certainty that spring is no longer debatable or reversible. And in my case, it also ends with my birthday, a date I've always experienced as a small open door to moral summer.

That summer that hasn't fully arrived yet, because the calendar insists there are still weeks to go, but which already seems to be here in the long sunsets, in the midday heat, in the desire for plans, for the beach, for outings in the sun, and for dressing with a different lightness.

Summer, sometimes, reaches the heart before it reaches the calendar.

And this year, May starts strong. It begins with Labor Day, which falls on a Friday and opens one of those weekends that are born with the vocation of a small interlude. And if that weren't enough, it culminates with Mother's Day, a date that represents so many of our customers: mothers, daughters, or both at once.

A date to celebrate, to give thanks, to accompany... and also, why not say it, to pamper oneself a little.

Because there are gifts that come from outside and others that arise from within oneself. That perfect self-gift, that pampering in the form of a new blouse, a flowing skirt, or a special dress that not only celebrates style but also the right to intensely experience the arrival of the longest days of the year.

The days when you start to feel like walking barefoot on the grass, preparing a bouquet of wildflowers during a walk in the countryside, improvising a meal in the sun, or extending the after-dinner conversation until the afternoon turns golden. Simple, almost domestic, but profoundly happy moments. Moments that May begins to return to us as if it had been saving them all winter.

Yes, we know it very well: don't cast a clout 'til May is out. And although many of us have been thinking for weeks that the heat has already settled in, May still asks for some caution. It's a beautiful month, one of those that should be lived day by day, savoring its changes without rushing too much towards what has not yet arrived.

Because May is not just the antechamber to summer. May is pure spring.

It's the ideal time to make that second wardrobe change: leave behind the high-grammage long sleeves, padded jackets, darker jeans, and everything that already feels visually heavy. But without completely putting away the layers. Because in the city, especially when the heat begins, we live with two realities: the street and air-conditioned interiors as if they were small cold storage rooms.

Many of you tell me every year: "Marta, I freeze in the office in July and August."

And I understand you perfectly. During my years in the tropics, I always carried an emergency jacket in the car. Because you could enter any place where, while the asphalt was burning outside, someone inside had decided to set the air conditioning to sixteen degrees.

So yes, we're heading straight for the heat. But the contrasts aren't going to disappear.

That's why May calls for a lighter, fresher, and brighter wardrobe, but also a smart one. It's time to bring to the forefront nautical clothing, linens, cottons, short-sleeved shirts, flowing skirts, fluid dresses, and everything that already speaks of summer. But it's also good to have a thin cardigan, a light parka, a denim jacket, or a linen or cotton blazer close by.

We will continue to dress in layers. Fresher, softer, freer, but layers nonetheless.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful changes of May is the arrival of sandals. Feet, after months captive in ballet flats, sneakers, ankle boots, and Mary Janes, begin to reclaim their freedom. And with them also comes another way of walking, dressing, and feeling the season.

May invites us to change the weight of our wardrobe and also our mood. Linen knitwear, cotton, flowing skirts, dresses that move with the body, shirts that barely graze the skin, sandals, and hats begin to occupy their natural place.

Yes, it's spring. But the countdown to the solstice has already begun.

And perhaps that's why May has something so special: because it doesn't demand we rush into summer, but rather prepare to receive it. With calm, with beauty, with practical sense, and with that mix of enthusiasm and prudence that women who are worth two know so well.

May is the consecration of mid-season. The most beautiful time of the year for those of us who love to dress in layers, play with fabrics, lighten colors, and feel that each day brings a small promise of light.

Knowing how to enjoy it, like almost everything that matters, is a matter of attitude.
